ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE

Provides support for all Life Enrichment Managers working in Verve managed residences, across Ontario. Consults with the National Director of Wellness in the development/continuation and implementation of new initiatives, standards, policies and procedures. This position ensures that the programs for our residents support the vision of the company.

 

Note: This position is one day per week.

 

BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Training in dementia care programming required (e.g. Montessori methods, Alzheimer’s, GPA, U-First etc.). Previous experience in the development, deployment and monitoring of dementia care programming required.
  • Knowledge of programs and techniques in recreation, community resources and previous experience in seniors’ program development and deployment required.
  • Successful completion of a diploma in recreation/leisure studies from a recognized community college or university or courses in gerontology and at least five years of experience working with seniors in this capacity.
  • Previous experience in training and developing team members.
  • Excellent English communication skills necessary.  
  • Must be proficient in Word, Excel and Publisher.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluates and makes recommendations on the initial orientation processes used at the residences, to assess resident interests and activity needs.
  • Provides input and assists in the evaluation of the Verve/Diversicare signature programs relating to the Dimensions of Wellness, (physical, emotional, social, intellectual, purposeful and spiritual) needs of our residents and the effectiveness of those programs to consistently deliver on our vision.
  • Works with and provides direction to the Life Enrichment Managers, in ensuring standards and policies are met or exceeded.
  • Participates in the hiring process for Life Enrichment Managers. Participates in the training/orientation programs and with the Life Enrichment Manager, provides instruction and guidance to life enrichment staff.
  • In conjunction with the National Director of Wellness and the General Managers, assists in the preparation of performance reviews and may be required to participate in the review process as necessary.
  • Participates and assists Life Enrichment Managers in developing and maintaining department goals and objectives, compliance with best practices, company and provincial legislative standards. 
  • Assists in development of the life enrichment goals and objectives for moving the Company’s life enrichment programs forward.

 

  • Maintains established department plans, policies and procedures regarding such items as quality of programming and treatment of residents. Monitors and evaluates Life Enrichment Managers’ compliance with corporate standards.
  • Maintains all required records and reports.
  • Assists with the regular review of departmental manual using a consultative process and keeps the departmental manual up to date.   Recommends any changes.
  • Liaises and consults with peers and professionals in the community and industry to better meet the needs of the residents and department activities.

Committees

  • Assists and participates in regional life enrichment meetings four times per year.
  • Assists with agenda and minutes for regional meetings and sends to National Director of Wellness prior to circulation.
  • Participates on other committees as assigned.  

 

Regulatory Standards

  • Provides input into the preparation of responses to the RHRA as it relates to compliance reports for the life enrichment services department (retirement residences).
  • Assists General Managers, and Life Enrichment Managers in preparation for accreditation surveys in accordance with applicable provincial standards and best practices, upon request.  
  • Reviews health inspections related to life enrichment services and makes recommendations to ensure compliance, as applicable.

 

VQI

  • Participates in the Verve Quality Improvement (VQI) program and recommends VQI tools and procedures related to Life Enrichment/Recreation Managers.
  • Adopts best practices with respect to key responsibilities and ensures standards are continuously improved.

 

Purchasing

 

  • Reports to National Director of Wellness and General Managers any major equipment repairs and/or equipment purchases required for life enrichment.
  • Assists in maintaining a record of suppliers for life enrichment programs and provides recommendations on service and prices to Regional Directors of Operation/General Managers/Life Enrichment Managers. 
  • Makes recommendations on corporate contracts as they relate to life enrichment services.

 

Travel & Work Schedules

  • After discussions with the National Director of Wellness, monthly work schedules will be established to ensure that the majority of time is spent at ‘high opportunity’ communities, as determined by the Operations Team and the National Director of Wellness.
  • Must possess a current, valid, G-Class Ontario driver's license and be willing to travel using own personal vehicle, with some overnight travel required.

 

General

  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System.  This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.
  • Complies with all corporate policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required mandatory training/education.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the National Director of Wellness.
