The role of a Village team member is to facilitate an enriched living experience for each Villager by: fostering and nurturing relationships; enabling Villagers to control and manage their day; enabling feelings of safety, security & connectedness to people and things that matter to each person; establishing trusting relationships with families; enabling learning of new things, and; making meaningful contributions within The Village and surrounding communities. Our success is largely determined by the amount of joy, love and laughter experienced by each of those we serve – Villagers, staff, volunteers and local community.

The primary role of a Household Leader is to empower each Villager to achieve and sustain health and well-being, live life to the fullest, flourish and thrive, regardless of cognitive or physical limitations. This is achieved through the organization of Resident health care and hospitality services in accordance with the requirements of registered Assisted Living and licensed Complex Care in British Columbia.

A Village Household Leader is a role like no other. Reporting to the General Manager, a Household Leader is a creative role, requiring diverse skills, abilities and interests and professional flexibility. As a key member of The Village’s skilled and confident interdisciplinary team, they are accountable for the following activities and outcomes in a registered Assisted Living and licensed Complex Care community.

 

  1. Wellness Promotion

 

Our goal is to help each Villager remain as independent and autonomous as possible, for as long as possible. A Household Leader promotes wellness in the following ways:

  • Leading full-scope household operations including hospitality, home support, care planning, meal planning and meal preparation and enriching Resident lives.
  • Leading Resident move-in and transition planning.
  • Partnering with Village Leaders to enable person-directed and person-centred care.
  • Compliance with relevant federal, provincial and regional legislative and regulatory instruments which guide living in a registered Assisted Living or licensed Complex Care community.

 

  1.  Health Care

Our goal is to ensure that each person receives the health care they need, when and where they need it, in a manner that facilitates their enriched living experience. A Household Leader will enable health care by:

  • Leading coordination of home support and health care activities for people living with diagnosis of dementia, including cognitive, social and emotional support.
  • Supported by the Health and Wellness team, may provide professional services within the scope of their own profession (i.e.) nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation as per individual qualification and regulatory body oversight
  • Following routine practices in all aspects of care and compliance with infection control protocols.
  • Assisting in monitoring and evaluating the outcome of specific interventions.  
  • Performance of other related tasks as delegated by a Registered Nurse.
  • Communicates high risk concerns or situations to the Health and Wellness Manager.

 

  1. Household Team Support

At The Village, dedicated Household Teams provide Residents with appropriate ongoing assistance, monitoring, supervision and care in such areas as activities of daily living, medication management and direct health care. Household Leaders will be support by The Village Health and Wellness Team and Enriched Living Facilitators to manage a Resident care in accordance with each person’s Personal Services or Care Plan.

A Household Leader participates as a member of the Household Team by:

  • Managing and enabling enriched living and household and homemaking operations including:
    • Supported by The Village Chef, meal planning and preparation
    • Household budget
    • Scheduling
    • Employee relations
    • Health and safety
    • Housekeeping
    • Laundry
    • Provision of personal care
    • Life enrichment including events and activities
    • Management of household equipment and supplies
  • Orienting new household team members to The Village person-directed and enriched living model of care.
  • Completing performance appraisals for household teams
  • Coordinates and evaluates educational programs in the household.
  • Responds to Resident or family concerns, reportable and non-reportable incidents
  • Maintaining health records in compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Coordinating the delivery of each person’s Personal Service or Care Plan in accordance with The Community Care and Assisted Living Act.
  • Exemplifying a Resident-directed culture, consistent with industry, professional and regulatory standards.

 

  1.  Other Responsibilities:
  • Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WorkSafe BC and Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems.  This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents and/or any changes to resident’s daily life, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.
  • Compliance with all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to the promotion and completion of continuous education and professional development.
  • Participation in The Village Quality Improvement program.

 

 

Necessary Qualifications, Skills, and Experiences

 

A Village Langley Household Leader will have demonstrated the following in previous endeavors and will be evaluated on the following:

               Professional Abilities & Qualifications

  • A nurse eligible for registration with the BCCNP, OR/ degree, or minimum 2-year diploma, in therapeutic recreation, OR/ an allied health professional, registered with the appropriate college or regulatory body.
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience, 2 years supporting older adults with a dementia diagnosis.
  • Excellent knowledge of The British Columbia Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Residential Care Regulations.
  • Culinary and housekeeping skills and interests.
  • Demonstrated leadership excellence and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the concepts of shared leadership and team empowerment, and person-directed care.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Computer literacy.
